Saracen 72 years later

The remains of HMS/m Saracen were found on 22 June 2015 by Guido Gay from AzioneMare with his catamaran the DAEDALUS after a long and detailed search.

Guido wrote:

SARACEN found! This morning I inspected a sonar contact found yesterday and...there she is beautifully adorned by white corals. The position is about 4 miles (nautical) east of the expected one in a depth of 422m. The contact was hidden in the overlapping of sonar passes and it came out when I was covering those small doubtful areas. Please find attached some significant pictures of the forward half of the boat, probably sufficient for your identification.'

Saracen had travelled on underwater for a distance of 10 nautical miles from where she was scuttled and lies in Italian waters to the west of the island of Elba.

George Malcolmson from the Royal Navy Submarine Museum identified her from the photographs taken by Guido.
