After Capture

After being held in Bastia, Corsica, the crew were taken to PIOMBINO on the Italian mainland and from there the officers were sent to POW Camp 50, at the MACAO BARRACKS, ROME and the ratings to CAMPO NO. 1 MARINA in the little town of MANZIANA to the west of LAKE BRACCIANO.

After the Armistice the OFFICERS were entrained for PG 19 BOLOGNA prior to being sent to Germany.  A/Sub. Lt. ROY CHARLTON ELLIOTT managed to escape from the column en route to the station and sought refuge in the VATICAN.

The RATINGS were led out of camp MARINA NO.1 into the woods by Italian officer Captain MARIO CUNEO. Affter four days in hiding they dispersed in small groups and tried to reach Allied Lines.

The full story of their adventures is told in TWIXT THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA, Janet Kinrade Dethick and Anne M. Corke, Lulu.com.
